Summary

Life is not a problem to be solved。 ACT shows how we can live full and meaningful lives by embracing our vulnerability and turning toward what hurts。

In this landmark book, the originator and pioneering researcher into Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) lays out the psychological flexibility skills that make it one of the most powerful approaches research has yet to offer。 These skills have been shown to help even where other approaches have failed。 Science shows that they are useful in virtually every area--mental health (anxiety, depression, substance abuse, eating disorders, PTSD); physical health (chronic pain, dealing with diabetes, facing cancer); social processes (relationship issues, prejudice, stigma, domestic violence); and performance (sports, business, diet, exercise)。

How does psychological flexibility help? We struggle because the problem-solving mind tells us to run from what causes us fear and hurt。 But we hurt where we care。 If we run from a sense of vulnerability, we must also run from what we care about。 By learning how to liberate ourselves, we can live with meaning and purpose, along with our pain when there is pain。

Although that is a simple idea, it resists our instincts and programming。 The flexibility skills counter those ingrained tendencies。 They include noticing our thoughts with curiosity, opening to our emotions, attending to what is in the present, learning the art of perspective taking, discovering our deepest values, and building habits based around what we deeply want。

Beginning with the epiphany Steven Hayes had during a panic attack, this book is a powerful narrative of scientific discovery filled with moving stories as well as advice for how we can put flexibility skills to work immediately。 Hayes shows how allowing ourselves to feel fully and think freely moves us toward commitment to what truly matters to us。 Finally, we can live lives that reflect the qualities we choose。

This is a book I will revisit over and over again as I draw on ACT approaches in my work as a clinical psychologist。 Like other reviews, I felt it could have been more concise。 On the other hand, the descriptions of how to apply various skills across different clinical presentations was helpful。 I'd love a brief/summary version of this book! A secular re-tooling of many methods of mental liberation arrived at by various spiritual traditions。 I'm glad some of these spiritual teachings are being standardized in order to replace the rotting corpse of modern psychology。 However; I also feel that a lot of the more expansive and interesting implications of said spiritual traditions have been left out to satisfy secular sensibilities, much to the books detriment。 A secular re-tooling of many methods of mental liberation arrived at by various spiritual traditions。 I'm glad some of these spiritual teachings are being standardized in order to replace the rotting corpse of modern psychology。 However; I also feel that a lot of the more expansive and interesting implications of said spiritual traditions have been left out to satisfy secular sensibilities, much to the books detriment。 。。。more

I loved this book so much- it was a wonderful introduction to ACT (acceptance and commitment therapy) and how to apply it to various situations we deal with in life。 I was left feeling inspired and hopeful。 I highly recommend this book。

A wonderful book for therapists and clientsThis book describes the principles of acceptance and commitment therapy。 It is suitable for everyone who wishes to rid themselves of negative thinking。 ACT promotes the idea that getting rid of negative thinking is not the solution。 Rather , it is about changing the relationship we have with negative thoughts and feelings。 The book is a wonderful read and also contains exercises。 Steven Hayes, the founder of ACT, also shares his own story of how ACT was A wonderful book for therapists and clientsThis book describes the principles of acceptance and commitment therapy。 It is suitable for everyone who wishes to rid themselves of negative thinking。 ACT promotes the idea that getting rid of negative thinking is not the solution。 Rather , it is about changing the relationship we have with negative thoughts and feelings。 The book is a wonderful read and also contains exercises。 Steven Hayes, the founder of ACT, also shares his own story of how ACT was developed based on his own trauma。 He is a very compassionate and thoughtful doctor。 I highly recommend 。。。more

So, I finished the main (second) section of this book about three months ago, before the start of my spring semester。 I just now got around to finishing the last part of the book, but I've essentially been implementing its advice for months now。 This semester has been my best yet mental-health-wise and I truly believe that is in part because of the flexibility skills I learned from this book。 If you haven't read it, read it。 Or at least look into Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and psych So, I finished the main (second) section of this book about three months ago, before the start of my spring semester。 I just now got around to finishing the last part of the book, but I've essentially been implementing its advice for months now。 This semester has been my best yet mental-health-wise and I truly believe that is in part because of the flexibility skills I learned from this book。 If you haven't read it, read it。 Or at least look into Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and psychological flexibility。 As the book explains, ACT is for everyone; it is as universally applicable as therapeutic approaches get。 You need not be suffering from anything to benefit from it (though if you are suffering, it will help)。 ACT is about improving your life, getting out of your head, and reconnecting with your values。 It's pretty rad。 。。。more

Not “bad” perse, but having just read Flow, this book basically says much of the same except in a fluffy, bubble, “relatable” tone。 Not my jam, though I suppose it’s probably more accessible to a wider audience。 Made it 60 pages in。

I had a first pass at this。 Each exercise is well thought through and transformative。 I could easily add it to my life manuals for course correcting that's needed time to time in life。Perhaps, that's because of my life in Nordics, I would have liked it more if they were not trying to sell ACT so much。 When someone tells me, again and again, this is better than all else, a doubt naturally enters my mind :) I had a first pass at this。 Each exercise is well thought through and transformative。 I could easily add it to my life manuals for course correcting that's needed time to time in life。Perhaps, that's because of my life in Nordics, I would have liked it more if they were not trying to sell ACT so much。 When someone tells me, again and again, this is better than all else, a doubt naturally enters my mind :) 。。。more

This started out as a very interesting read。 The science of ACT is very compelling。 The book moves well until the 2nd half and becomes more about the exercises for ACT。 It's hard to use the concepts with out someone holding you accountable (thus a counselor I guess) but the information is solid and I'm sure will benefit many people。 This started out as a very interesting read。 The science of ACT is very compelling。 The book moves well until the 2nd half and becomes more about the exercises for ACT。 It's hard to use the concepts with out someone holding you accountable (thus a counselor I guess) but the information is solid and I'm sure will benefit many people。 。。。more

How strange - I can't decide between a 3 and a 5。 I wanted to learn more about ACT, the next wave after CBT。 I appreciate the descriptions of the core skills in ACT to develop psychological flexibility and got a good-enough overview。 I did not find all the anecdotes to be worthwhile。 I give the theories behind ACT a 5/5 and would easily recommend this book to reference time and time again。 How strange - I can't decide between a 3 and a 5。 I wanted to learn more about ACT, the next wave after CBT。 I appreciate the descriptions of the core skills in ACT to develop psychological flexibility and got a good-enough overview。 I did not find all the anecdotes to be worthwhile。 I give the theories behind ACT a 5/5 and would easily recommend this book to reference time and time again。 。。。more

Disappointing to one who really likes the ACT approach。 Presented as a self-help book, I can't imagine too many laypersons who would want to slog through the history and limitations of cognitive behavior therapy to get to the advice。 I thought it was trying to do too many things and the actual advice part was sometimes difficult to understand and, I imagine, put into practice。 Would recommend Hayes' "Get out of your mind and into your life" for much more helpful self-help。 Disappointing to one who really likes the ACT approach。 Presented as a self-help book, I can't imagine too many laypersons who would want to slog through the history and limitations of cognitive behavior therapy to get to the advice。 I thought it was trying to do too many things and the actual advice part was sometimes difficult to understand and, I imagine, put into practice。 Would recommend Hayes' "Get out of your mind and into your life" for much more helpful self-help。 。。。more

An important read! If I were to approach this book again, I would read it as three separate books。 It is divided into 3 parts and while they build on each other, I think it would have helped me absorb and digest the enormous amount of information provided。。。 They each have very distinct purposes。 I have since begun reading the Table of Contents more thoroughly before I start a book :)

I've become a huge fan of ACT and after reading Get Out of Your Mind and Into Your Life, I was excited to check out Hayes's latest book。 If you aren't familiar with Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, you'll find an accessible look into the approach by one of it's founders。 It builds upon the CBT tradition and goes beyond it and simple mindfulness-based approaches。 All of it is evidence-based and research heavy, but Hayes writes in a conversational way and leaves his references for the appendix, I've become a huge fan of ACT and after reading Get Out of Your Mind and Into Your Life, I was excited to check out Hayes's latest book。 If you aren't familiar with Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, you'll find an accessible look into the approach by one of it's founders。 It builds upon the CBT tradition and goes beyond it and simple mindfulness-based approaches。 All of it is evidence-based and research heavy, but Hayes writes in a conversational way and leaves his references for the appendix, making for an engaging read。 In Part 1, Hayes proposes we suffer from the Dictator Within and amidst all these self-criticisms and negative thoughts, instead of fighting it (e。g。 cognitive restructuring), why not drop the rope? We can begin to defuse from those thoughts, turn towards distressing experiences, gain acceptance, connect with our values and translate that into committed action。 Part 2 covers the six pivots of ACT (Defusion, Self/perspective-taking, acceptance, presence, values, and committed action)。 Part 3 covers how we can use these pivots and skills to develop healthy behaviors, nurturing relationships, and more flexible performance。 He also reviews applications of ACT to different mental health conditions, chronic illness, spirituality, and finally a review on how ACT has helped on a wider scale in Sierra Leone。 Overall, A Liberated Mind is an essential read for ACT therapists and those looking to apply ACT to better their lives。 。。。more

I picked up this book after I heard the author being interviewed on the Plant Yourself podcast。 While in found the interview, I found this book hard to read and I put it down a third into it。 Too many personal stories, examples, etc that distracted from the main idea。 A more succinct version for those interested in the subject but not in the many details would be useful。

The book presents a practical approach of developing psychological flexibility, which authors claims and has proven to some extent, is an important skill set while existing in this planet。 A must read for everyone looking forward to open their minds !
